Discount Code Updates

After Black Friday, a bunch of store owners had some great ideas for our discount code system. We picked out two of the best, and added them. Here’s a quick overview of the new features:

Free Shipping Add-On

With this option, you can add free shipping to any other discount. For instance, if you wanted to give out a free promotional copy of a physical item, you can give someone a discount code, that not only gives them the item for free, but also gives them the shipping for free.

Discount Links

This allows you to create a URL to anywhere in your store, and then automatically apply a discount to the cart. It makes it extremely easy to give out a discount to a specific person. Obviously, this works well with the Free Shipping Add-On feature above. If you wanted to give someone a promotional item, the Discount Link would make it easier for the person you’re giving it to.

To build a Discount Link, just click “Link” next to any discount in the “Discount Codes” section of your store’s admin area.

Introducing The PledgeMusic Splash Page

A few weeks ago, we talked about PledgeMusic, a direct-to-fan service that we think is doing something amazing for the music industry. PledgeMusic helps artists and bands design a fundraising campaign to raise money for their next release. In that post, we also said that’d be working with them a lot in the future. Well today, we’re really excited to announce a brand new feature that we’re calling the PledgeMusic Splash Page.

With a few clicks, the PledgeMusic Splash Page lets you greet every fan that comes to your Limited Run store with a special splash page, promoting your current PledgeMusic project. After you install the Module and tell us where your artist page at PledgeMusic is, we’ll automatically generate a splash page for your store, complete with your project’s details and a badge that shows off its current status.

Your fans can then click through to PledgeMusic to learn more about your project or they can continue into your store.

We’re really excited to be working with PledgeMusic and would like to say thanks to everyone over there for helping to make this feature possible!

Download Cards - The Best Just Got Better

Earlier this year, the creators of Limited Run announced a brand new, self-serve, download card service, called Card Included. As you know, Card Included made download cards incredibly easy and affordable. Within minutes you could design a card, upload your music, and download a ready-to-print PDF of all your cards. It didn’t matter if you needed 25 or 2500, Card Included was there, ready to go.

Today, we’re happy to announce that we’ve stepped it up again, with five huge improvements.

Lossless Audio Uploads & Multi-Format Downloads

You now have the option of uploading your lossless audio files, rather than a single zip. When you upload lossless, we’ll automatically convert it to a bunch of great formats and let your fans pick which they want to download.

Any Website as Your Download Page

You can now make any website be the page your fans see when downloading. After they download, the site will be there waiting for them. Have the page be the news section of your website. Or your store. Maybe you have a pre-order you want to promote. Anything is possible.

Expanded Social Links on Custom Pages

Although we’ve added the embedded website feature, you can still choose to make a custom download page instead. And if you’re using a custom page, you’ll be happy to know that we’ve added a slew of new links you can add like: YouTube, Blogger, WordPress, Last.fm and more.

Shorter Download URLs

We’ve significantly reduced the size of our download URLs. Where your fans used to have type 15 character codes, they now only have to type 5 characters.

Reorders

Need another run of cards? No problem! Just click the link in your confirmation email, and enter the number of cards you need. That’s it!

We’re extremely proud of these recent changes. Card Included used to be the only self-serve download card service, now it’s also the only lossless audio download card service. It just keeps getting better. And the price is still just 1 penny per 20 MBs!

PledgeMusic - Why It's Really Awesome

We wanted to write something about a direct-to-fan service we’re going to be working with a lot in the future. That service is called PledgeMusic. If you haven’t heard of it before, here’s an overview.

PledgeMusic helps artists and bands design a specifically tailored fundraising campaign to raise money for their next release. Whether you’re looking to record and distribute your next album, or you’ve already recorded it and you just want to gauge your fans receptiveness to unique formats like vinyl, PledgeMusic makes it extremely easy.

Using PledgeMusic also gives you a way to set up different tier levels, so that each fan has a way to contribute as little, or as much as they like. For instance, take a look at Ginger Wildheart’s newest Project. Here he’s not just doing an album for one of his bands, but two albums for his band Mutation, and another one for his band Hey! Hello!. But fans of each band can contribute separately. So if you like pop, you’ll be able to contribute to the Project, and only receive music for Hey! Hello!. But if you’re into “guitar riffs”, which Ginger discusses a lot in his very funny preview video, then you can contribute and receive just the two albums from Mutation.

What’s really interesting about this approach is by piggy backing these two bands together, Ginger is getting each band cross pollinated by the other. Marketing costs are lower with this method as well. We have never seen someone do this before, but Ginger is an expert. His Triple Album Project debuted at #27 on the UK Top 40, and ranked as high as #9, when he used PledgeMusic. So it’s no wonder he’s trying and experimenting with new angles on the platform.

PledgeMusic does a few things differently than other platforms out there. And these features definitely made the choice easy when we decided we wanted to work with a direct-to-fan fundraising platform. Obviously them being only about music was important. Even though anyone can use our service to sell their digital and physical products, we’ve always developed with selling music in mind. But there’s something else they do that made us do a double take. Normally on other fundraising platforms, when the Project is over, meaning the date of the end of the Project is reached, fans can no longer contribute. This makes for major headaches for the Project Creator, because if they don’t also have a place to let fans preorder the album outside of funraising, then they’re essentially stuck selling nothing until their album is officially released. This idea of switching the fan flow to your store during the preorder process completely fragments the sale of your record. Just like when labels and bands use our service for their preorders, we always like to see them using one store the entire time. PledgeMusic has this same idea in mind, because even when your date is reached, and your Project goal is met, fans can still contribute and preorder the album. The date is just the Project’s state change signifier. It lets the fans know the project has moved onto to the next step, not that the Project is over. Only when the Project is in the Released state, does preordering stop. This is exactly how a typical preorder works. And it’s also the perfect spot to switch sales to your online store.

Over the next month or so we’re going to be working very closely with PledgeMusic to make your transition from the Released state of your album on PledgeMusic, to what most people would call, the Available state in your online store easier. We’ve got a couple of very cool ideas in mind, so we’ll keep everyone informed as they develop.
